If you have to learn how to make money then you should try tweeting on Twitter. It is a simple way to promote your site, but one of which most have little knowledge. Twitter is not a new phenomenon on the internet, because it was created by Jack Dorsey as long ago as 2006. Don’t laugh – 2006 is a long time ago in internet terms, and Twitter has grown a great deal since it was conceived by Jack as a means of small groups communicating by using short SMS messages.

Messaging services are now commonplace, but Twitter has developed into a world-wide phenomenon. I am not here to discuss Twitter’s past, but how you can use it in the future: not only to communicate with people, but tomake money and turn it into a marketing tool more effective than any that have gone before .

I fully understand how Google works (as well as anybody who is not employed by Google can), and Twitter is Google bait! This will only last for a short time, and even if you only have a blog that you want to promote you must learn how to use Twitter to promote it. If you have a Squidoo lens, just the same: Twitter can be use to give you visitors.

So how is that? The question you have to answer yourself when you tweet on Twitter is who will see it? A tweet is not a web page, and is not listed on a search engine. It isn’t an email, or any other direct means of communication. The only people that will come across those short messages you send are those that are ‘following’ you. To do that,they must deliberately click a link so that they do so. Why should they?

Many newbies to Twitter make their tweets and they go nowhere because they don’t have any followers. Imagine if you could choose your own followers. One way to make money with Twitter is to get people off Twitter and onto your website. The only way to do that is to get them to click on the links in your tweets instead of moving on to their next tweet. How do you get them to click?

Well before they can click they have to see the tweet in the first place. So to maximise exposure of your important link containing tweets consider doing one or both of the following. Include relevant keywords in the text of the tweet so that it’s more likely to turn up in a search. Make the tweet retweet friendly by keeping it less than 120 characters long. A retweet can be very powerful because it is effectively a personal recommendation, so allow extra space for it to be easily done.

Using a URL shortener is a must. Not only does it shorten the link it also disguises the nature of the link forcing people to click it if they want to know wants on the other end. An added bonus is that some link shorteners also allow you to track link-throughs which could provide useful information in determining what type of links work best with your target market.

To increase the chance that your link gets clicked you need to also post links to things other than your website. The purpose of this is twofold it helps you gain the trust of your followers who won’t think of you as spammer and it also gets your readers in the habit of clicking your links.

We live in an instant society so don’t link to your homepage when you can link directly to a product page.

People are naturally curious so think of ways to build up that curiosity. Ways to achieve this are to have your tweet hint at where the link will take them but not give the game away. You could use multiple tweets to build up suspense for a final tweet that contains the link.

So you want to make money with twitter? Well who doesn’t. Twitter appears to be one of the most popular social networking machines around, and you can quickly get twitter followers that you can make money of. But how to do it. Here are a few ideas.

First, there is direct selling. You can send tweets to your followers about this great offer you have, or this great affiliate product that of course you earn commission on. You put the link to the offer in your tweet and hope that your followers will click on it, and even better, buy the product so you earn commission.

It’s a little tricky to do all this in 140 characters (the maximum length of a ‘tweet’), but it’s possible if you shorten your affiliate or product link by using one of the many shortening tools available online, such as bit.ly, budurl.com or tinyurl.com. Check them out.

The second way to make money with twitter is to send people to a freebie opportunity. You put a link in your tweet to a CPA (=Cost-Per-Action) offer. CPA might be a whole new topic for you, and you may need to read up on it.

With CPA offers you can promote offers that would earn you a small amount, say a dollar. The good thing is that for these offers people often just have to leave an email address or ZIP code, and then they get a chance to win an iPod, or win a certain amount of money for free shopping or whatever.

This stuff can do well for you, especially if the offer is related to your interest. This method is similar to the one above, but the offer is attractive as it doesn’t cost anything for your twitter followers.

The third and last tip I’ll give you is perhaps the best: make money with twitter by giving away a free gift, a report, ebook, video etc. when people enter their email address in your opt-in box on your website. So you send a tweet with a link to your freebie, and build an email list. Then you can market to that list later. Making money from your list is much more lucrative than direct sales to twitter traffic, even though that has also worked for me.

There is one important thing. For any or all of the above methods to work, you need to get a large enough amount of targeted (like-minded) twitter traffic to your offers. So first, do try and build up enough of a targeted twitter list to be successful.
